What is the Endocannabinoid System?

Endocannabinoid System and CBD

A system of receptors within the human body is what makes up the endocannabinoid system. It was first discovered when scientists began to examine the effects of marijuana on the human body, in the 1990s, which qualifies it as a fairly recent discovery. With some research and studies, professionals have been able to figure out a few of its functions.

The reason why it took quite a while to discover the endocannabonoid system is because of the reputation that marijuana carried in the earlier days, when it was known to be a taboo and used only by criminals and those who were “good for nothing” as they call some people.

Several local restrictions were then imposed on the drug until it was officially classified as a Schedule 1 drug by the DEA in the 1970s.

What Does it Control?

The endocannabinoid system can control one’s mood, appetite, memory and sleep as well.

It comprises of 3 main parts including the receptors, the enzymes and the endocannabinoids.

The Receptors: They are located throughout the body and work as binding sites for the endocannabinoids. There are two significant receptors- CB1 and CB2.

  • CB1: It primarily acts on the central nervous system thus controlling one’s mood, sleep, appetite, etc.
  • CBD2: It acts on the peripheral nervous system which deals with inflammation, pain, swellings and more.

The Enzymes: They break down the cannabinoids that we as humans consume and help them reach the receptors.

CBD

CBD or cannabidiol is a cannabinoid present in the hemp plant, but it doesn’t give a high feeling unlike THC that does. CBD can benefit one in various ways. It helps uplift one’s mood, lessen anxiety and depression and help with easing one’s symptoms of a chronic disease like cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Where can I Get CBD?

You can get CBD online or at a store in a state in which it is legalised. Since it comes from the same plant as marijuana does, it is illegal in a few states and countries. However, if your state approves of this natural way of dealing with illnesses, you can find it easily. It can be found in different forms and comes in various types which one can buy depending on his/her preference.

Types of CBD oil:

  • Full spectrum: includes all the cannabinoids of the hemp plant including THC but in an amount that doesn’t get one high.
  • Broad spectrum: includes all the cannabinoids of the hemp plant apart from THC.
  • Isolate: Includes only CBD.
