CBD for Psoriasis

While being the largest organ of the human body, the skin protects our internal organs from getting hurt or damaged. However, sometimes it tends to react in different ways, which can be the result of a number of reasons. Sometimes, the environment doesn’t suit a particular skin type and can cause dryness, itchiness and even inflammation.

Amongst the many skin infections that the body may have to deal with, is psoriasis which can be a chronic illness for many. In fact, according to the World Psoriasis Day consortium, over 125 million people across the globe suffer from the disease.

Psoriasis doesn’t necessarily appear all year long; it comes and goes in cycles. However, those who have to deal with it can face a lot of irritation both physically and psychologically as well.

Physical Effect of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a condition of the skin that can cause it to look flaky with a silverish lining on top as a coat. Apart from the look of it not being too appealing, it can cause a lot of irritation to the person who has to deal with it since it can cause a lot of itching and can make that part of the skin become sore. Majority of the time and in most cases, it affects the knees, elbows, trunk and scalp.

Psychological Effect of Psoriasis

Even though the world today is way more empathetic than it used to be thanks to the youth who fight for peace and equality, even if one develops a tiny pimple on the face, they feel conscious when having to socialize. So, if a person unfortunately suffers from psoriasis, it isn’t the easiest for him or her to be able to meet new people and have conversations with other individuals without feeling conscious about their very visible skin disease. Even whether out of concern, there are still people who may ask them questions like, “what’s that around your elbow?” or “do you suffer from a skin infection?” after which they may go on to discuss the disease, making it very difficult, awkward and uncomfortable for those who suffer from it.

Cure for Psoriasis

Unfortunately, there still isn’t any cure for the disease. Of course, there are various treatments that one can opt for in order to reduce the symptoms of this disease. Even though psoriasis in itself isn’t too harmful, it can lead to more serious diseases including arthritis in the joints especially, obesity, diabetes and more. That’s why, if one does suffer from the disease, it is ideal for them to pay attention to their symptoms and treat them at best.

According to researchers, topical ointments can be a good bet to help ease the symptoms of psoriasis. Apart from lotions and creams, light therapy and medication can help reduce the symptoms of psoriasis.

CBD for Psoriasis

CBD is known to be good for the skin, since it is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory in nature. Topical CBD creams and lotions can be very helpful in reducing the symptoms caused by psoriasis.

However, various studies conducted in the year 2019 concluded that CBD creams that contain no THC but a few other cannabinoids deemed helpful for those who chose to use it as a treatment for their psoriasis.

How to Use:

Using CBD creams and lotions to treat psoriasis is very easy; all one has to do is gently apply and massage it on the area affected for a few months after which one shall be able to see results.

Risks:

Even though CBD can be used to treat diseases and infections like psoriasis, it can be harmful for those allergic to topical CBD itself. If an individual uses topical CBD creams or lotions to treat their skin infections, but see an unusual development like a swelling or inflammation that usually doesn’t happen, they are advised to discontinue using the cream and seek medical help immediately.

Is CBD Legal in the United States?

On a federal level, CBD is allowed to be used as medication, but some states prohibit its usage. However, they should be derived from the hemp plant and should contain less than 0.3% of THC.

What Kind of CBD Cream/ Lotion Should One Use to Treat Psoriasis?

CBD products come in 3 major forms:

  • Full-spectrum CBD: Contains all the cannabinoids of the hemp plant including THC.
  • Broad-spectrum CBD: Contains every cannabinoid present in the hemp plant except for THC. One can gain every benefit of every cannabinoid (except for THC) present in the hemp plant with this form.
  • CBD Isolate: Contains only CBD and no other cannabinoid.

According to a study conducted in the year 2019 (as mentioned earlier), full-spectrum CBD may not be the best choice to help treat psoriasis since it contains THC. Broad-spectrum and Isolate CBD creams should be considered instead.

However, before you make your purchase, it is important that you consult a professional in order to understand what kind of CBD related product you should choose to buy.
